RCY RIDE
REPORT
Kanan 3rd
Tunnel
West to Zuma-Edison
Fireroads
Sunday
04-15-07
Nine of us--Matthew, Jamshyd, DavidR,
Efi, BruceB, GaryM, Sheryl, Ken and I--arrived at the parking lot just north of
Kanan Tunnel T-1 on a cool but clear morning. We had an immediate problem
when it was discovered that Sheryl's backpack's water bladder had leaked.
She needed an immediate transfusion.

delicate procedure
The good news, however, was that the
transfusion was successful and had the beneficial result of providing us with
yet another batch of Sheryl's homemade chocolate chip cookies at ride's
end. But I get ahead of myself.
We made the decision to vary our
usual ride where we head east, up and over the tunnel, by
instead heading west on the singletrack trail that meets up with
Zuma Fireroad about 2 1/2 miles away. It is a beautiful little trail that
I had not done in a while; I had also forgotten how tough some of the short
climbs on the trail were. But that only foreshadowed the very tough climb
to come.
Reaching the terminus of the trail,
we headed south beginning the climb up Zuma Fireroad to the property at
Buzzard's Roost. Then it was a fireroad descent to the intersection with
the unmaintained Edison Road.

I think I scared some of
the people that had not done this ride before.
I pointed out the canyon
that we would momentarily be descending....
and then the climb that
would follow on Edison Road.

entrance to the Edison Road
We headed down the approximate 2 mile
descent into the canyon on Edison Road. At the bottom, speckled
sunlight filtered onto a beautiful small creek which the dirt road crossed
as it transitioned from descent to climb.

From this point it was an approximate
2 mile gruelling climb up the rocky, unmaintained road. But
we all made it and were treated to some beautiful views.

Although our climb was
tough, this ladybug had to do it upside down
A short pedal brought us back to
Kanan Road where we turned left and cycled back to our cars via the
pavement. With all that climbing under our belts, a hungry 7 of us headed
over to the Santa Fe Cafe to put some calories under those belts. And
some fine chatter and yentaing. And, of course, an appetizer
and dessert made up of Sheryl's delicious cookies.
Have a great week.
