Caballero Canyon to Sullivan
Canyon
Sunday
6-18-06
Eight hardy souls began the
climb up Caballero Canyon on an overcast but very humid morning. Although
the sun was hidden and the temperature was in the mid-60's, the moisture content
in the air must have been over 90%, making for a perspiring ascent. At the
top of the climb, we were met by Nelson who had pedaled across dirt Mulholland
from his Woodland Hills home in order to return to the "scene of the crime," his
crash and knee slicing done earlier in the year in Sullivan Canyon.

Thus it was 9 of us who headed
east on dirt Mulholland, pedaling to firegate 26 (Sullivan Ridge) and finally to
the entrance to Sullivan Canyon. From here it was down one of the best
local trails, an exciting run thru the beautiful tree shrouded canyon over hard
pack, loose rock, short steep drops and ascents, water crossings, and log
hopping. Pure, unadulterated FUN.

Our love of the beautiful
canyon was so great that we did not want to leave. And so it was decided
to retrace our tread and head back up the canyon. Going at a slower
pace, one could better absorb the joy of the lush natural beauty all around
us, yet trying to avoid the occasional outcropping of poison oak. And
wouldn't you figure....just as we were approaching the final steep climb out of
the canyon, the sun came out, thus allowing us to broil as well as bake.
(Actually the temps were a lot cooler than they were a couple of days
ago)
When we regrouped we headed
back up to dirt Mulholland where a couple of riders proceeded back to their
cars while others decided to extend the ride a bit and so headed for an
out-and-back to the Nike Missle Site. Then it was back to the west along
dirt Mulholland where a few of us could not resist the fun of the Gizmo/Red
Car/Upper Bent Arrow Trail detour.

At ride's end, Rod, Matthew,
Dean, David and I headed over to The Greystoke Grill for some fine food and
tasty talk to end another great weekend of mountain biking in southern
California.
Have a great
week.
