Just a few words and pictures regarding this past weekend's RCY mountain bike rides....

Saturday @ Caballero Canyon-a short tale

We had a small but determined group of three riders arrive at the Caballero Canyon trailhead (actually we had 4 riders but George was only riding past us on the street as he had to go to work on Saturday).  Joe, John (who recently returned from conquering Mt. Whitney by foot....next time he'll bike up) and I decided to head for The Hub rather than the posted Sullivan Canyon ride.  A pleasant cruise and conversation brought us up Caballero Canyon and over to the Hub where John, on a time schedule, had to head back.  So Joe and I continued on to The Foundation where we enjoyed the view before heading back to the top of Caballero Canyon.  I, too, was on a time schedule and so it was only Joe who continued on riding while I headed down Caballero Canyon to the cars.  It was a strange twist of fate that had Joe being the only one who did not have to get back home early.  What will the gods think of next?

Sunday @ Rocky Peak-a slightly longer tale with some photos

Five riders arrived at the pink shopping center on Keuhner Road for the trek towards Rocky Peak.  DavidR, Rod, Matthew, Jamshyd and I set out on a morning that was quite cold at our homes when we awoke, but at ride start in Simi Valley the day was quickly warming up with the gusty Santa Ana winds.  We took the usual route around the Mt. Sinai Cemetery to the base of the Chumash Trail and then headed toward the Las Llajas Fireroad climb.  At Las Llajas we met up with 2 other riders-Ken and Michael--who are friends of BruceB and they accompanied us on the climb.

We decided to climb the steep section of the Rocky Peak Fireroad towards the Chumash Trail.

The tire fixed we continued on towards the Chumash Trail with the Santa Ana winds gusting.  Michael and Ken left us to head down Chumash while the original 5 decided to descend Johnson Trail.  But not before Matthew brought out his apples and caramel--his new combo of green, tart apples and sweet caramel was a hit.  Re-energized we headed for the always fast and exciting Johnson downhill.

Near the bottom of the trail we met up with 3 riders from the South Bay MTB Club who were climbing up Johnson.  Louisa, Miyuke and Ken joined us for a photo before continuing on their climb.  What is it about the RCYs and women?  We get few women to ride with us and here is a group that is two-thirds female!

From the bottom of Johnson we rode up and over Santa Susana Pass Road back to our cars and then on to the latest incarnation of the A-frame restaurant on Santa Susana.  The food and ambiance was quite good at the newly opened eatery, now called something like Old Susana Cafe.

Have a great week!
