RCY RIDE
REPORT
Chesebro Canyon
A Thanksgiving Day
Tradition
11-23-2006
In preparation for the eating frenzy
later in the day, 8 RCYers arrived for an early morning calorie-burner up
Chesebro Canyon for our traditional Thanksgiving Day ride. Passing
many attractive female runners--one would think they should have been in the
kitchen on a day like this (ouch! I'm gonna get in trouble for that
remark)--were DavidR, Tal, Efi, George, Joe, Reuben, Jamshyd and me. The
day started off on the cool side, but we quickly stripped off outer layers at
the Sulfur Springs/Baleen Wall fork to enjoy a sunny and pleasant day. We
also chatted with some of the women runners at this point before we picked the
left hand fork to climb up Sulfur Springs Trail.

We continued on up the canyon until
we arrived at Shepherd's Flat. At this point we did our traditional
yenta-ing before making the thoughtful decision to head down the
GasPipe/TacoHill/BrokenSpoke Singletrack. However, according to new signs
in the area, I think that the trail that goes from Shepherd's Flat
west to Palo Comado and east all the way down
GasPipe to the Las Virgenes Fireroad is officially called the Sheep Corral
Trail. Let it be written, let it be known.

From here we continued down the
technical, always fun GasPipe/TacoHill/BrokenSpoke section of the newly named
Sheep Corral Trail....old habits die hard.

And in spite of our bad
smells and worse manners,
we were briefly
joined by a female rider Pauline
We had one near catastrophe
on the downhill....George lost his banana on the trail....
but good samaritan Joe
found it and dutifully returned it to its rightful owner.
At the bottom of the downhill we
turned right, took the fireroad and then singletrack to the Little Baleen climb,
then rode the ridge fireroad that eventually allowed us to drop back into
Chesebro Canyon. After a quick detour up and down the Modelo Trail and
connector we headed back to the cars. As we approached the vehicles in the
parking area just off the street, I noticed a bunch of people plus a
couple of L.A. County Sheriffs standing near my red 4Runner. Good
news, bad news. The good news was that my vehicle was okay....the bad news
was that the female runner who had parked her Volvo SUV next to me had had her
car broken into and wallet, cell phone, etc. stolen.

Leaving the lady and her friends with
their woes, 6 of us headed on over to the Calabasas Commons to prime the pump in
anticipation of the eating festivities later in the day.
Hope you all had a very meaningful
Thanksgiving filled with friends and family and gratitude.
