Caballero Canyon/Hollyhock/Westridge
Singletrack
May 22, 2005
I'm a day late, so dock my pay.
I had a full schedule Sunday afternoon
and evening, and so I am just now composing my thoughts and pix. Let's see
if I can remember what happened yesterday. I did not take pictures of
everyone on the ride and so my first challenge will be to remember who was
there. We started out with DavidR, Joe, George, Mitch, Ali,
Jamshyd, DaveW, Sam, and me (I think I am missing
somebody) riding up Caballero Canyon as the morning temperature began to
rise. As we headed east on Mulholland Fireroad, Dean
eventually caught up with us, having ridden from the top of Reseda. We
headed over to the top of Hollyhock, descending (without Joe who headed
back) the overgrown singletrack. At the bottom we were met by
BrianD who had ridden up Sullivan Fireroad from the westside to
join us. A brief ride on Mandeville pavement brought us over to GardenLand
where we climbed the fireroad while the air temperature also climbed. It
was getting hot.
At the top of Garden Land FR we reached
the Westridge Fireroad. The group started to break apart at this point, but
the majority of us decided to take the singletrack that parallels the
fireroad, heading south.

Mitch (training for the AIDS
Ride) surrounded by monkey flower
There were alot of short very steep
climbs, along with several steep and rutted downhills. Some walked, some
rode, and some crashed.
George and Mitch walking,
Jamshyd riding,
Ali recovering
from a minor crash....he was
okay
George having a great time
Dave posing during a rest stop
(which he apparently didn't need;
he continued to the bottom of
Westridge and rode up Sullivan Canyon!)
While English Dave went his way (he
caught up with us back at the cars) and Brian continued on back to the west
side, the rest of us headed back up the hot climb of Westridge FR eventually
reaching dirt Mulholland for the ride back to our starting point. I took a
little detour around the Gizmo/Red Car/Lower Bent Arrow Trail where I
crashed once, but nevertheless recovered to have lunch at La Salsa with the
2 Daves, Dean and Jamshyd.
I know that I am still forgetting
someone who rode with us....forgive me. And have a good week.
